LESBIAN AND GAY SOLIDARITY
MULTIMEDIA - ISSUES IN DEPTH
In June 2002, Islamic student group "JEMAAH" held a forum at the University of Western Sydney (Bankstown) entitled "Islam & Homosexuality, an Islamic, scientific and logical approach", speakers were UWS psychology lecturer Hanan Dover and Australian Lebanese Muslim Community spokesperson Keysar Trad. The lecture was heavily fundamentalist in its tone. Dover was suspended from UWS for a period under EEO policies.Alex Day of the Canterbury Bankstown Lesbian & Gay Social Group, as well as members of PFLAG Western Sydney and ACON Western Sydney, attended the talk.
ALEX DAY INTERVIEW BY BARRY McKAY ON JOY RADIO AUGUST 2002 (14.30 minutes)
Text of talk by Hanan Dover and Keysar Trad given at forum
Some of the major concerns emanating from the lecture listed by Alex Day are:
1. Sheik Shadi calling for an Islamic court to be set up in Australia, which would give Muslims the power to stone Gay Men & Lesbians to death.
2. Keyser Trad, Vice President, Lebanese Muslim Association, rejected the concept of Anti-Discrimination and Anti-Vilification legislation, and urged Muslims to defy these laws.
3. Hannan Dover, a lecturer in Psychology at UWS (Bankstown), told us that she would not allow a Gay lecturer at the University to attend the lecture. She went on to inform the audience that she would also not allow Progressive, Pro Gay Muslims to attend this lecture, nor would she allow them to join a group she was establishing for Muslim health workers.
